Strawberry Rhubarb Tarts
I've been in a real MUST BAKE mood lately, and even though I'd made a dozen cupcakes last Tuesday (oh yeah, uber cupcakes!) I still had the desire to bake something more. A friend of mine had suggested lemon meringue pie, but as I am neither a fan of most lemon flavoured treats, or of meringue, I cast that aside. But, it did plant the seed for thinking about pies and tarts.
I've never actually baked any pies or tarts before, so this was a first for me. But hey... it's just baking, how horribly wrong can it go, right? The recipe I used was quite easy and simple too, so I wasn't too worried. I had been a little concerned that I wouldn't be able to find any rhubarb, however. Back home, my parents or some family member or other usually just had a patch of it growing around the yard. Here in Ottawa... not so simple. Luckily, the Hartman's downtown had some - I grabbed the second to last bunch - and it was just the right amount I needed.
Long story short, after a small panicked moment where a few of the tarts were oozing juice in the oven, they all turned out wonderfully. I had one straight from the oven, still warm from baking, and it was absolutely wonderful. Warm, sweet, juicy, with a wee bit of tart from the rhubarb. I hadn't realized how much I missed those flavours.
I took a few photos, because I like to share that which I bake with others. Baking is one of the few things I'm any good at or enjoy very much at all so I very much like spreading the joy. And the deliciousness. Here are my tarts!

Here are the tarts before going into the oven.

I'll admit they're not the most attractive looking tarts I've ever seen but damn do they taste good. And in the end, I guess that's what counts. This definitely gives me confidence to try more pies and tarts and other such sweet treats. I've been wanting to branch out from cakes, cookies and cupcakes for a while now anyway.
Irritatingly, my hands are quite sore today and I think it may have been because of the baking, kneeding the dough and whatnot. Doesn't help that putting up those shelves on the weekend did a number on them in the first place. My poor arthritic joints! *grabs a cane and hobbles off* Heh.
I should probably be doing something work related right now so, I'd best get on that... Cheers!

And here they are after being baked, lightly golden with a buttery flakey crust and sweet, fruity filling!
